Shadow Mountain Quilters, a quilt guild located in Pahrump, Nevada, is celebrating its 27th anniversary in 2021. Starting with fewer than 10 quilters at the home of one of our members, the guild today has 100+ members who quilt, crochet, knit, embroider, weave, tat, etc.

We normally meet at the Bob Ruud Community Center, located at the corner of Highway 160 and Basin Avenue, on Thursdays from 9 AM to 2 PM for sewing days. Some members bring sewing machines to work on projects and others do handwork. On these days, our Hospitality Committee sets up coffee and snacks. Show and tell is always fun and inspiring.

During the Covid shutdown and due to renovations in process at the Bob Ruud Center, we are temporarily meeting at the Nye Communities Coalition on Thursdays from 9 AM to 1 PM for sewing days. While our attendance is down considerably, we still get together to sew and visit, and our Hospitality Committee still offers coffee. We also enjoy show and tell.

We have a monthly business meeting on the 2nd Thursday. On the 3rd Thursday, we extend the meeting to an “all dayer” from 9 AM to 4 PM, when we offer classes, have charity quilt sew-ins or work on other special projects. Once a quarter, this “all-dayer” also includes a pot luck.

Due to having less business to conduct during the shutdown, business meetings are scheduled quarterly, and quarterly potlucks are on hold until we are back in the Bob Ruud Center.

The Programs Committee organizes well-attended classes, where members can learn new sewing techniques for quilt making, make tote bags, jackets, learn fabric dying, etc.

Since we cannot have the normal classes, quarterly projects have been fun — making wallhangings, tablerunners, and iron caddies. Those who complete their projects are eligible to win prizes.

Guild members enjoy triannual quilt retreats in nearby Amargosa at the Longstreet Inn & Casino. These 4-day retreats are eagerly anticipated and a lot of fun.

Our guild members are committed to helping their community through donations of quilts and numerous hand crafted items to several local charities throughout the year.
