Shadow Mountain Quilters, a quilt guild located in Pahrump, Nevada, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014. Starting with fewer than 10 quilters at the home of one of our members. The guild today has nearly 150 members who quilt, crochet, knit, embroider, weave, tat, etc.
We meet at the Bob Rudd Community Center, located at the corner of Highway 160 and Basin Avenue, on Thursdays from 9 AM to 2 PM for sewing days; some bring sewing machines to work on projects and others do handwork; on these days, or Hospitality Committee sets up coffee and snacks. Show and tell is always fun and inspiring.
We have a monthly business meeting on the 2nd Thursday. On the 3rd Thursday, we extend the meeting to an “all dayer” from 9 AM to 4 PM, when we offer classes, have charity quilt sew-ins or work on other special projects. Once a quarter, this “all-dayer” also includes a pot luck.
A Programs Committee organized well-attended classes, where members learn new sewing techniques, making tote bags, jackets, fabric dying, quilt making, etc.
The quilters are committed to helping their community through donations of quilts and numerous hand crafted items to several local charities throughout the year. Nothing goes to waste, fabric scrapes are made into dog and cat beds, which supply many local animal shelters.
SMQ produces the annual Pins and Needles quilt show in February, providing an opportunity to showcase our quilts, stitchery, crochet & knit items, wearables and anything made with fiber. We create an annual opportunity quilt, with the winning ticket being drawn at the end of the show. The show includes a wonderful display of quilts and needlework, vendors, silent auction, a traditional bed turning and demonstrations. Non-members are invited to enter an item in this event.
